History of Grama Panchayat
eezhattur Grama Panchayat, the birthplace of the renowned poet Poonthanam Namboodiri, is a region rich in historical, cultural, and agricultural heritage. Established in 1962, the panchayat is notable for its high literacy rate and communal harmony. Linked to the history of Valluvanad and the Khilafat movement, the area upholds a strong literary and social tradition. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood; a shift from paddy cultivation to plantation crops such as rubber, black pepper, and tapioca is evident here. The landscape—featuring mountains, hills, paddy fields, the Velliyar River, and numerous ponds and streams—enriches the panchayat's natural wealth. In the education sector, schools, a pharmacy college, and libraries provide excellent services, while a Primary Health Centre and an Ayurveda hospital cater to healthcare needs. Various religious communities coexist here in unity, with temples, mosques, and churches serving as symbols of social harmony. Although small-scale industries exist, there is significant potential for further development in sectors such as rubber-based industries, tourism, and mini-industrial estates. Robust development plans and active public participation enhance the prospects of transforming Keezhattur into a model Grama Panchayat.
